Why is it so frequently the case that this symbol (in books) looks like it was designed by someone other than whoever originally designed the rest of the font? Do typesetters usually need to take it from a different font? To me it always looks way too big and way too far below the baseline, and often overly italicized. Also, the set width is often extreme. Perhaps it's just me. But for example dollar signs always seem to fit in with the rest of the font. It could be quite difficult to design.. I've spent a few minutes in a bitmap editor to try to come up with one (made of asterisks) that I could post here to clarify what I'm talking about (it's like a script capital L with either one or two horizontal strokes), and couldn't come up with something which was recognizable as asterisks (although it was recognizable in pixels). But I have seen apparently consistent pounds symbols in crt fonts. ajr
