[comp.fonts] Downloadable deskjet fonts

ba124@cs.city.ac.uk (K.A.Streater) (07/10/90)

I have 3 deskjet plus printers, and a large collection of LaserJet II
fonts from an old printer. I would like to be able to use the HP LJII
fonts in the deskjet and have heard of a program called HP2DJ or similar
to convert the fonts. Could someone explain what I need in the wasy of
cartridges etc. for this all to work and sources of the conversion
program.

I have a friend that just got a DeskJet Plus and, since I have a bunch of
public domain LaserJet fonts, I've been wondering if there might not be a
conversion program so that he could take advantage of what I have. After
I first read your note I went looking on Simtel and found that they have
a DESKJET directory and there is a program there called DJFONT.ARC. I got
it and according to the documentation it will covert many portrait fonts
up to 24 point. It is designed for the DeskJet but the documentation says
that it seems to work on the DeskJet Plus also. If you are successful in
finding HP2DJ I'd like to hear about it - it may be more flexible than
DJFONT.

The program "lj2desk" and "fontview" are available as a package from S. H.
Moody & Associates, 1810 Fair Oaks Avenue, South Pasadena, CA 91030. Lj2desk
will convert LJ fonts for use on the DeskJet and DeskJet+ (I have two myself).
Fontview allows you to view the fonts.

Due to the way the DeskJet prints, it's no possible to use all fonts; those
that are too large (high) are noted by the conversion program. I've been using
lj2desk for some time now, and haven't found any problems with it.

You might also explore HP's Type Director 2.0; the promotional package includes
a serif (CompuGraphic's Times) and a sans serif (CompuGraphics Univers 1) in
scalable form. These can be used to generate DeskJet fonts in any reasonable
point size (as well as generating fonts for other HP lasers, Windows, etc.

I have seen no public domain program that converts LJ fonts for use on the
deskjet, but it wouldn't be too difficult to write one, if you want to invest
the time. Frankly, the small cost of lj2desk (I don't remember what it was,
exactly, but it was reasonable) and its proven correctness made it my choice!
