[comp.fonts] Swiss and Dutch fonts?

dsong@sunb1.cs.uiuc.edu (09/12/90)

Does anybody know what commonly used fonts on Macintosh are close to
Swiss and Dutch? I heard that Helvetica may be the same as Swiss.
How about the Dutch? Any help will be appreciated. Many thanks in
advance.

Dutch is the name of a Times Roman clone. Remember, the name Times Roman is
a trademark, but the font itself cannot be copyrighted. So anyone can clone
the font if only under a different name.

Swiss and Dutch are Bitstream's names of their Helvetica and Times
clones. They are not exactly the same, but quite close.

Actually, if you want to be picky and technical, Bitstream's names for
Helvetica and Times Roman are Swiss 721 and Dutch 801, respectively.

They have a bunch of other "Swiss" and "Dutch" typefaces, because they
use these terms as classifications. Helvetica and Times probably happen
to be the most commonly used families in these classifications.
