I've been using the IBM PC keyboard for a little over a week now. If I were using it exclusively I'd adapt pretty fast, but I'm spending about equal time on three keyboards; two with the shift key next to the 'Z', and one IBM PC. I frequently get "\\\\p" when I'm trying to get 'P'. I'm adequately adaptable in general -- I can switch rather readily from alto to soprano or tenor recorder -- but that extra key is the pits. From: Daniel F Chernikoff <DFC@Mit-Mc> Concerning user adaptability, I recently purchased a Visual 200 terminal which also suffers from keyboard problems -- the return key is a long stretch away, and the feel of the keyboard was "mushy" at first. But the person who sold it to me shrewdly told me to use it for 2 weeks before making up my mind to buy it, and in that time I not only had perfectly adapted, but find no problem using it after working all day on my Datamedia at the office (with an entirely different keyboard layout and feel). On the other hand, I have NEVER been able to make the switch from Soprano and Tenor recorders to an Alto recorder, as Jim Gillogly has. The moral as regards the IMB PC keyboard, I would presume, is to try to get a loaner for a while and see if you can live with it. The best solution, of course, would have been for IBM to have done it "right" to begin with, but if the Mountain won't go to Mohammed... -Dan (dfc@mc, dan@sri-tsc)
