[comp.fonts] TypeScaler question

tp@mccall.com (Terry Poot) (11/17/90)

I just read the press release from Sun about their OpenWindows sources code
giveaway. The press release mentiones "OpenFonts(TM) with its TypeScaler(TM)
technology" as part of the package. I have a few questions for people who know
about this software:

1) Can this be the same software that a well known font vendor and Sun licensee
has proposed to license to me for an obscene (5 digit) price? (He just called me
again this morning!)

2) I have an application that needs to print quality text on an electrostatic
plotter (Versatec 400dpi). I was intending to imbed TypeScaler software into my
application to acomplish this. (My application is strictly in-house, no
distribution, sale, licensing, royalties, etc.) Any reason I can't use this
software distribution for that purpose?

3) What fonts come with it? What kinds of fonts can it use? Where can I get them
(free, commercial, etc.)? I need a good sans-serif (something like helvetica), a
sans-serif Cyrillic, and Kanji.

4) It says the source will be available for $995(!) media charge from Sun
distributors on January 1. Can anyone tell me where I can find a Sun distributor
in Kansas? I want my tape ASAP (depending on the answer to the above questions,
of course).
