[comp.fonts] Legal issues concerning Adobe fonts

orthlieb@adobe.COM (Carl Orthlieb) (12/20/90)

Since there have been recent postings to the net of programs which can
translate a copyrighted Type 1 font program into a basic PostScript
language file, we (Adobe Systems) would like to state our position on
this matter.

Even though translation of copyrighted font software can be considered
to be an infringement of the copyright, Adobe has stated previously that
it is permissible for individuals to do this for their personal use - if
the copyright notice is retained. However, it is not permissible for anyone
to redistribute, sell, or share on a server - modified or translated font
programs.

The problem with some translation software is that the copyright notice
may not be retained - or may otherwise lead people to believe that the
derived version is not protected. We hope that such tools enhance the legal
owner's utilization and enjoyment of their fonts.
