To anyone who may understand PostScript Fonts: I have just accomplished what was supposed to be an impossibility. I transferred my Mac Adobe Type 1 Fonts to my NeXT Cube 030. The hows and whys are not important right now, but I'm sure someone will want to know. Just ask. However, I have noticed that some of the files just don't do anything. I'm trying to figure out why. The following description assumes that you are familiar with NeXTStep. I run buildafmdir on /NextLibrary/Fonts. No problem. I run WriteNow, and call up the Font Panel (Command-t). I go through the new fonts (they're all listed) one by one. Most of them are fine. The panel splits up the font from the family, as does Adobe Type Reunion on the Mac. Still, no problem. However, I noticed that FreestyleScript, LinoText, LinoScript, PBodoni-Poster, and one other I can't offhand recall, won't preview in the font panel. And if I try to type once I've set to that particular font, the program crashes. One strange thing I noticed is that the FontManager tries to force a style on these typefaces, even though they don't all have them. For instance, the font panel reads LinoText-Roman, LinoScript-Medium, etc. I don't think it should do that. Anyone out there from Adobe have any clues? BTW, yes, this is all legal. I've already spoken with someone at Adobe. I was told that, as long as I keep my original Mac Font packages, and don't use the fonts on a Mac, I'm not violating the license agreement. I no longer have a Mac, and I haven't sold my Fonts. Thanks, MikeC -- ___________________________________________________ Michael D. Callaghan,MDC Designs, University of Merryland mikec@wam.umd.edu

My roommate and I wrote a program over the summer which allows you to convert just about all your Macintosh type-1 PostScript fonts to a direct Mac-usable form. You don't have to go through any "weird" steps, just transfer the files from a Mac (as a MacBinary file) to the NeXT, and then run our conversion program on them. NOTE: The AFM (Adobe Font Metric) files are necessary for the NeXT to recognize the fonts. Also, the corresponding Macintosh bitmapped Suitcase files are _NOT_ necessary. Just the actual PostScript file, and the AFM file. Our program can be found at 'sonata.cc.purdue.edu', in the directory /pub/next/source, filename 'mac-font2next.shar.Z'. Complete instructions are included in the file. Hope this helps. If you have any questions, just mail me. Eddy J.
