Out of the way. Nothing I know of, aside from obscure font conversion
programs, uses the AFM files. Not that they could not be used, it's just that
nothing does, it seems. I spent a lot of time on this question once, and
decided to archive them and use the space for things that might be used.
The one sure way I know to tell a good modern electronic document from
a traditional document is the kerning. Something so algorithmic ought to be
in the programs we use, but they just aren't yet. Hold onto 'em though, there
are a lot of potential uses for them.
