I am having trouble getting fonts off of the directory in the um-mts.cc.umich.edu server. When I get the fonts, I can't get any program to recognize them. Is there something that I have to do before I can install them. Do I need to use
something like Binhex or Stuffit?

Keep downloading from um-mts.cc.umich.edu.. That is not the main difficulty - I think the problem you are having is the transfer mode - It must be ASCII - Image or Tenex will give you garbage that no program will recognize...
