[comp.fonts] readability of old-style numerals?

It's well known that mixed-case text is more readable than all-upper-case
text, the reason being that the variation in height across words gives more
information for recognition. Does anyone know of comparable studies of
readability of numbers using conventional uniform-height numerals vs
old-style numerals (which have, effectively, ascenders and descenders)?
