Greetings, I have made some changes to the Tamil font "Palladam" that I wrote. The font is available on chmsr.gatech.edu and can be ftp'ed using anonymous login. I took advantage of the fact that there is only one case to simplify the typing of letters which are combinations of consonants and the short and long form of U. For instance, you can get "ru" by typing <shift>r and "ruu" by typing <option>r (in some cases you need to use <shift><option>letter due to the way Apple maps the letters to the keyboard). Since the dot over consonants is used fairly often, you can get that now either by typing back quote (old method) or by typing "f". ("F" now gives you "aaytha ezhuthu".) I expect to copy the new version to the "pub" directory on chmsr soon. I plan to remove the old version at that time unless I hear a lot of complaints and/or requests to leave the old version alone. If you have been using the original version, I would like to hear from you. I am trying to get a feel for how many people are using it. The font will continue to be free. A version for NeXT is available. I plan to port the font to IBM-PC (for Windows 3.0) sometime. Ghostscript is also planned. While I have a volunteer to help me port to IBM-PC, I would welcome help for other ports. Of course any font derived from the original must be free and no commercial dealings are allowed. I cannot tell you when the ports (and some intended "beautifications") will be available since my professorial responsibilities continue to keep me busy. regards, govind T.
