Is there a public domain full International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) font suitable for use with X Windows? Our pupose is to display the phonetic information associated to a dictionary entry. It would have to be displayed on the screen of a Sun (SunOS 4.1) under X11 R4. But any format easily converted into X format (eg vfont) would be of interest. We already have a font labeled "ipa-s25" found in X11.R2/3 as well as on HP and Lisp machines. Infortunately it is not complete, and a bit too big in point size. We also know of the IPA font for TeX of Washington University, and the existence of a program that enables to convert it into X fonts. How easy is it to do that? Has anybody done the job already and is willing to share it? By the way, is there a standard encoding (on eight bits) for IPA characters (ISO or otherwise)? If there is enough interest I'll summarize answers to this news group. Thanks in advance!
