I just wanted to follow up on the continuing saga of Stokoe notation by mentioning that Bill Stokoe and I are currently developing a multimedia version of his Dictionary of American Sign Language. The Multimedia DASL will allow users to look up ASL words directly, which I suspect was the prime motivation behind Bill's development of Stokoe notation in the first place. All in all, this makes for interesting discussion about the relation between one technology (writing) and other technologies (pen and ink, printing press, desktop publishing, etc.), doesn't it? Emerging technologies, such as multimedia, video compression, and gestural input devices (DataGlove and Mattel's PowerGlove) make for some exciting speculation about the future of ASL.
