[comp.fonts] Installing Adobe fonts in ATM under Windows

mroussel@alchemy.chem.utoronto.ca (Marc Roussel) (03/19/91)

Recently, someone posted an Adobe Type 3 font to comp.fonts
(Tymes-Elfin). I saved it, downloaded it to my wife's PC and tried to
install it under ATM for Windows only to discover that I hadn't the vaguest
idea of what I was doing. The font as posted was an ascii file containing
rather sensible looking commands. I then looked at the .pfm and .pfb files
that came with ATM and, to my surprise, discovered that the ATM fonts were
binary files. No problem, I told myself, the ATM install font routine
will probably do the translation for me. I therefore split the original
file into its constituent .afm and .fon parts (Is .fon the right
extension?), and attempted the install. As you can more than likely
guess, it didn't work (or I wouldn't be writing this note). So the
question is, what do I need to do to install fonts (such as
Tymes-Elfin) that I get from the net? Note that my wife and I aren't
particularly interested in this specific font, just in the procedure to
be followed, if indeed there is one.
As this is a Windows-specific question, I have redirected followups
to comp.windows.ms. If I get email replies, I will post a summary to
both of these groups. Email replies are of course highly preferred in
order to keep traffic down.

                                Thanks.
