As the proud new owner of a LaserJet III, I've run off countless pages to
see what different typefaces looked like. A few months later, all of the
printed pages have congealed into a massive clump somewhere in the backroom,
backing it a little difficult to remember what Bookman or Bembo or Garamond
look like.

Therefore I was thrilled to get "The LaserJet Font Book" by Katherine
Pfeiffer. This is a book made up of print samples at various point sizes.
All of the alphabet samples are shown at 8, 10, 12, 24, 36, and 72 point
sizes so that you can get an idea of how the typeface will look as a headline
or body text. Also, these faces are shown in text fragments so that you can
see how a paragraph or two looks at 8, 10, or 12 point size.

Chapters are broken down into "How to Choose and Use Type", with explanations
of various typesetting terms and a guide to how faces are classified;
"Evaluating and Using Fonts", which also compares bitmapped to scalable
outline fonts; "Font Specimens", which includes alphabet and specialty fonts;
"LaserJet III and Beyond", which includes using the III under DOS or Windows
plus the fonts available which use Resolution Enhancement; "Font Finders" so
you can look up a particular font; "Font Developers"; and "Draw Program Fonts"
so you can see what Corel Draw or Micrografx Designer's look like.

This looks like a good buy for anyone with a LaserJet or compatible, since it
includes samples for Agfa Compugraphic, Bitstream, Digi-Fonts, and all the
other typefaces. That means that you can look at the Bodoni faces until you
find the Bodoni you want, even if you don't have an LJ. With the price of
soft and cartridge fonts, this book can save you some money by pointing you
towards the right font vendor.

Published by Peachpit Press in 1990, "The LaserJet Font Book" has an ISBN of
0-938151-06-1 and lists for $24.95 (our price is $21.20 through April).

Note: with ISBN number (which also tells publisher), you may be able to have
your local bookstore or library order this book for you.
