[comp.fonts] Adobe Courier

I have seen discussion in the past about the pros and cons of Courier.
It is not my intent to start this up again. Courier has changed and I
would like to hear from others that have noticed this.

Newer versions of Courier from Adobe are different. I understand they are
outline fonts now instead of stroke fonts. In the process, the shape of
courier has changed considerably. For example, the serifs are square ended
on the newer Courier and round ended on the old stroke font. Also the length
of some of the serifs has changed, for example the riser off the bottom right
end of the 2.

There are 2 places where this has come to my attention. Using ATM you see the
new Courier (ATM PC and ATM 2 on Mac). On screen a 127 point courier has
obvious square serifs. Same printed on an older LaserWriter has round.

The other place this came to my attention is in the HP PostScript cartridge
for the LaserJet IID, IIP, III and IIID printers. On a IID at 10 point the
font has some bulges at the top and bottom of letters like lowercase s. It
was enough that the end user didn't like the output whereas the same courier
printed on a LaserWriter II NTX was acceptable. Although I haven't tried
I am guessing that some of this effect is masked in resolution enhanced
printers of the III series.

The question is, has anybody else noticed these things, has anybody complained
about this and did they get anywhere?

I have definitely noticed the changes in newer versions of Courier.
In particular, on the new HP LaserJet IIISi with the PostScript
internal firmware: Courier is way too skinny, a drastic change,
in my opinion. What a contrast with all the other PostScript
fonts, which look absolutely gorgeous on the IIISi printer.
