[comp.fonts] Package for printing Indian Language Text from Transliterated Input.

avinash@contex.contex.com (Avinash Chopde) (06/06/91)

Version 1.0, of the itrans package (Devnagari Script)
-----------------------------------------------------

I am currently developing a package for printing text in indian
language scripts, eventually I hope to expand the package to handle
as many indian languages as posible.

Version 1.0 supports the devnagari script.

The preferred input interface is through TeX (LaTeX, etc).
The input is in a transliterated form, each hindi/marathi letter is
assigned an english equivalent, and you use the english forms to
construct what will eventually print out in devnagari script.

** To use this package with TeX, you must have a PostScript-capable printer,
** and Tomas Rokicki's latest dvips package (see the FAQ in comp.text.tex
** for more info). (And, of course, you need TeX itself!)

** For rudimentary tasks, the input may be in simple ascii text form, in
** which case, all you need is a PostScript-capable printing device.

** You must also have a C-compiler available.

A single basic font is currently available, which I developed using
FontStudio. It is kind-of very heavy, in weight.
(Type III -- user defined PostScript font.)
Variations on the font such as slanted, compressed, expanded can also be
generated.
Since it is a PostScript font description, you can generate fonts of any
size desired.

####
#### THE PACKAGE WILL BE AVAILABLE Friday, 7 June 1991.
####

The package will be available as a single file, in compressed, tar format.
I do not have FTP facilities, but I do have uucp access to uunet, so I
will keep the tar file in the uunet:~ftp/tmp directory; it will remain
there only until uunet cleans the ~ftp/tmp directory...

If you would like to receive this package, please send me e-mail.
Please choose one of the following options, regarding how you wish to
receive it:
1) FTP (I will store the file in uunet:~ftp/tmp/itrans.tar.Z)
        Since this is a temporary storing place, you will have to get it
	as soon as you can (on Firday/Saturday, 7/8 June).
2) UUCP
       If you have uucp access to uunet, you could just uucp it over.
3) direct mail, from me.

    I would very much prefer if you could live with 1 or 2.
    I cannot afford to send too many copies out by method 3.
    Once again, this package will be available Friday, 7 June 1991.
    All mail requests will be handled next week (around 14 June 1991).

    I have been personally using this package for three-four months now,
    but I caution you that this is the first external release, there
    will be a few glitches in getting it to work....

{
    Once you get the file itrans.tar.Z, run this command to unpack
    all the files:
    $ # first mkdir/cd to whatever directory in which you wish to unpack
    $ zcat itrans.tar.Z | tar xovf -
}

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Note: My company has nothing to do with this package, I am solely
    responsible for all that has been written in this posting.
    This package is my own, private endeavor, I cannot indulge in this
    during company working hours, please bear with me if I am a bit long in
    responding to your e-mails.
