Last week our Mac IIx arrived, along with an HD80SC loaded with A/UX. We unpacked it, set it up and were greeted by an alert that said that A/UX required a PMMU in order to run. It very slowly became apparent over the past week that in fact although Apple claims that A/UX runs on the IIx, the version of A/UX that they *ship* does not. The important clue was this paragraph in the "Updates Available for Apple Products" notice: >-- A/UX, Version 1.01, available 9/88, is the A/UX 1.0 version > which runs on the Macintosh IIX Checking the version number on the disk they shipped us revealed that it was version 1.0. Then all I had to do was find out where the 1.0.1 upgrade was available. Which brings me to the reason for this posting. If you are contemplating buying a IIx and running A/UX on it, you will need to take two blank disks to a Miscoe office (don't ask) in Mississauga near the airport in order to get the A/UX 1.0.1 upgrade disks. Since this was less than convenient for me, if you're downtown and need the disks, send me e-mail and we can arrange a more civilised meeting place. By the way, to quote the "A/UX 1.0.1 Floppy Update Installation Guide", > The A/UX 1.0.1 Floppy Upgrade has a very limited audience and > you should determine if you need this update before attempting > to install it. ... > This update is only necessary if you are currently using A/UX > release 1.0 *and* your hardware fits into any of the following > categories: > > -- You have a Macintosh IIx > -- You have a Macintosh II and you intend to install or have > already installed the new Macintosh IIx Logic Board Upgrade > -- You have a Macintosh II and you intend to install or have > already installed the new Apple FDHD(TM) Macintosh II Upgrade (so don't bother me if you're just curious and don't have a IIx) John Chew -- john j. chew, iii phone: +1 416 363 8841 AppleLink: CDA0329 trigraph, inc., toronto, canada {uunet!utai!utcsri,utgpu,utzoo}!trigraph!john dept. of math., u. of toronto poslfit@{utorgpu.bitnet,gpu.utcs.utoronto.ca}
