We have inour possession one Macintosh A/UX system. After four months of evaluating our needs, setting it up and getting familiar with the system, and having read comments in this news group, I find I need to ask the question 'where is A/UX headed and how committed are software vendors relative to A/UX'. I have list of third party software vendors that have ported their software to the A/UX but that is just what it is - another port. Very few actually make use of the Mac interface. How closely can UNIX and the toolbox work together? Is it realistic to think that we can expect to buy relatively inexpensive Mac software and run it under A/UX without problems? For example I tested the Mac version of WordPerfect under A/UX and the screen I/O work just fine but when it came time to run the spell checker or to print, bam, the system hangs. I called the WordPerfect people and asked about future plans for an A/UX version. Their reply was maybe someday. And when they release a version, or for that matter when other software vendors release a version of their software, will it have to be a specal A/UX version? Or is A/UX going to blend in with the Mac OS so as to be transparent? Any ideas or answers? How about from the Apple developers ? What can I expect? I would like to think that there is a Mac interface in the works lots of software that will run under A/UX. If I could be assured of such a thing, I might buy several more. Also if anyone does have a list of 'planned' applications for the A/UX then I am sure that lots of us would like to see it.
