[comp.unix.aux] Ptrace Bug on A/UX

km@emory.uucp (Ken Mandelberg) (01/06/89)

The behavior of ptrace on A/UX 1.0 does not agree with the
documentation. The man page says that ptrace requests 4 and 5 can be
used interchangeably. In practice I find that request 4 will only allow
writes to the traced process TEXT or DATA region, and request 5 only
allows writes to the traced process STACK.

On the other hand the similar claim that requests 1 and 2 are
interchangeable does appear to be correct.

I am posting this bug report to the net, since it does not appear that
Apple has an appropriate mechanism for A/UX bug reporting. I don't
think I should have to pay for a hotline call to report a bug. Likewise
I don't think the hotline is a substitute for an up to date bug list.

Sun (which is far from a model of virtue in software support) provides
a free e-mail address for bug reports, and a on line database of those
reports for their supported customers.
