[comp.unix.aux] A/UX ship it on CD-ROM Apple!

dlw@hpsmtc1.HP.COM (David L. Williams) (03/04/89)

Here is an interesting thought for Apple!

How about distributing A/UX on CD-ROM? You already sell the player.

I would rather buy the CD player than the tape drive.

Media price could really lower the distribution costs of the product and
allow Apple to increase its market share of UN*X.

Send updates out on this medium as well!

Also:

1) No worries about the master copy being destroyed or corrupted or tape
   errors.

2) In fact you could even stick a ready to run system on the cd and just
let users copy over onto their hard disk to use!

3) Furthermore, you could put the Documentation on the CD as well!
Can you say HyperCard? Can you say Hypercard Man pages?

4) Notice that DEC is now doing this for VMS.

If you're planning to do this why not start with the 1.1 release of A/UX?

Hey, you could even have an X Windows CD with all the libraries, clients
and demo programs from the Consortium! Or better still include this on the
basic A/UX disk.

WHAT SAY YOU APPLE? Any comments Phil? Chuq?
