[comp.unix.aux] A/UX 1.1

km@mathcs.emory.edu (Ken Mandelberg) (05/08/89)

A few quick questions:

1) We got a letter from Apple saying that the 1.1 update
(on floppies or tape) would ship about May 1, somewhat
later than new systems shipped on hard disk. Well as of
May 7th, nothing has shown. Has anyone got their update yet?

2) Is there a working f77 on 1.1? While we didn't verify
it ourselves, the one with 1.0 was rumored to be unuseable.

3) I presume 1.1 still has no Pascal, and that the third
party Unisoft Pascal is the only alternative. We have not
been very impressed with either the Unisoft compiler or
their support.

Yes, 1.1 is out and we've got our updates a couple of weeks back.

We thought X11 was included-apparently, it is a separate product.

It is unusable and I was VERY pissed off about this when I bought the
system as I am a FORTRAN user and it seemed that it was a great idea
to get a system with f77. After much bitching and moaning I got
a copy of the UNISOFT Compiler to evaluate and that at least works
and in some cases seemd to be faster than the Sun3/60 that we have.
I havent used it for months since A/UX is so unfriendly to much of our
MacOS stuff I stopped using it. The students keep rebooting the
machine to use the MacOS and this is without syncing the drive so we
get allsorts of boot up errors and gripes when you reboot A/UX again.
BTW anyone want to buy NeWS for A/UX?

2). Yes, f77 now works much better (i.e., it works) on 1.1. It was a horrible
botch on the first release as we overlooked Q/A'ing it -- then discovered
it was broken when it was too late. We get red in the face and say "oops"
a lot when we are reminded of 1.1 f77.

3). Correct - no Pascal.
