[comp.unix.aux] Problems with XP150, A/UX & dp Help!

dlw@hpccc.HP.COM (David Williams) (07/01/89)

Hello A/UX dp gurus. I'm stuck...I can't get dp to write changes out to my
dataframe xp150 to configure the partitions for A/UX.

My configuration:

Stock Mac IIx with color
80meg internal apple drive
xp150 @ SCSI 4

SASH for A/UX 1.1 installed and running SASH from xp150.

sash# dp /dev/rdsk/c4d0s31
"/dev/rdsk/c4d0s31" 8 partitions, 8 allocated 304604 blocks

I can successfully update the partitioning info via dp. BUT when I attempt
to write the changes with the w command, dp aborts with the following error:

Command? w
Disk c4d0s31 Error: Illegal request, code = 0x20
generic disk c4d0s31 Error: Logical block 1, physical block 1
dp: write of dpme's failed
/dev/rdsk/c4d0s31: I/O error
Exiting due to error(s)

I don't know why I gt asked about Cluster's (or what else to put in) when
updating the BZB field.

I also wonder about this:

>ABM Field? i
>Warning: output file is not whole disk
>Initialize map anyways? n

If I type a y here I get a message similar to the one when I attempt a w.

Should I be running SASH from a floppy? Should the SASH partition on the 150
be unmounted with the rest of the other partitions?

Thanks in advance

David "Gee, will restoring from tape be this much fun?" Williams

Dave,

The one thing that I noticed in your output, was that the "type"
of all of your partitions is "Apple_HFS". This is certainly wrong
for your Unix Root partition, swap partition, and your eschatology
partitions.

Try getting the correct types and maybe that will help.

Tim.

Thanks for the suggestion Tim, I am able to change the "type" during my
run of dp, it is just that a "w" command to save the changes fails. It has
been suggested that I contact SuperMac to make sure I have the latest ROMS
in the drive itself, as older versions had problems doing the right thing
at an SCSI level.

Well, thanks to all concerned for solving my problem with A/UX 1.1 and my
dataframe XP150. It turned out to be a case of not having the correct roms
in my drive. I went over to SuperMac where Dave Silon swapped in a new rom
and we configured the drive using Manager and the dp command.

I installed A/UX 1.1 from tape last night without a hitch! Now onto
emacs and X 11.

Thanks again to Stacey, Marc and Dave.
