I am currently planning to buy a Mac for use at home for the following two main reasons: 1. Use it with MacOS for all the nice software already available on the market (word processing, graphics, desktop publishng, games, etc.) 2. Development of UNIX related software to be portable to BSD4.3 and SYSTEM V. I already know the MAC quite well for point number 1, and this is the main reason why I want to buy a Mac. However, I wonder how good AU/X for the MAC is to help me reach the goals associated point number 2. More precisely, I would like to know the following: 1. What flavor of Unix is AU/X ? 2. Does X exist for AU/X ? 3. Which MAC configuration is required to allow me to run AU/X? Will a MAC SE30 do the job, or do I need a MAC II{x,cx,ci}. What is the best buy for the ratio performance/price? 4. Will AU/X and MacOS cohabit nicely? How easy is it to switch from one to the other. Your personal advice and pointers to any papers that discuss these issues would be appreciated. Please reply by e-mail since I do not want to clutter the network with this 'novice' request for information. If there is enough interest, I will post a summary of all advices received. Many thanks in advance. Pierre. -- Pierre Delisle delisle@white.toronto.edu ...!{utgpu,utzoo,watmath}!utcsri!white!delisle
