[comp.unix.aux] uucico on AUX, Arrrg!, outgoing

segedy@cspi.com (Cathy Segedy) (02/16/90)

Hello everyone! I have now gotten my modem to stop flashing its lights and
work properly with AUX 1.1, and can use it with tip, etc. Millions of thanks
are sent to Tim Endres for his assistence with this!! Now I am trying to
be able to poll another site for mail. Is it possible to use uucico to call
out on AUX 1.1 or AUX 1.1.1? For some reason we can't get it to open the
device correctly. Is there some magic which must be placed in L-devices
or L.sys to get this to happen? We even went so far as to try to get
the device to open with a simple 'C program (shown below). This program
HANGS!! it also hangs if we use "r+" instead of "w+". The device and the
/dev directory have permissions 777. (We tried other combinations as well)
Owner is currently daemon, group daemon. We have tried various other
things here as well. Please help. What are the magic incantations which
we must perform??
If you answer by mail, don't put .com after the site cspi. It
will just bounce about.
					thanks a million, cathy segedy

Uucico, like lots and lots of other stuff in A/UX, is slightly broken. I don't
recall the details, we just junked it and used Paul Campbell's version.

While I'm posting, I'd just like to flame a little:

A/UX UUCP SUCKS!!!!
It's utterly disgraceful.
Here's some non-flames:
mail is broken: it doesn't respect file locks, so that if multiple messages
come to one mailbox at the same time, they'll interleave into one long message.
mailx is broken: setting a pager will blow away serial lines
lots of uucp stuff is faulty: uucico, uucp, uuxqt, etc. Sorry, I don't remember
all the details on these as it's been a while.

Oh, yeah...

*** WHERE THE HELL ARE ALL THE MAN PAGES??? ***

What a totally half-assed job!

[Now back to your regular programming... And if I've offended anyone at Apple,
sorry, but I'm calling them as I see them. I'd just _love_ to be proven wrong
in public, too- it'd be embarrasing but at least my system would start working
better. ...And this had better be fixed in 2.0. (We'll see next week, I think).]

ps- I'm off to belize for two weeks. Sorry to flame and run, but if anyone
really wants to toast me back, you had better mail me, or the news may be gone
by the time I get back...

You forgot to mention that cu doesn't work properly.

I'll save the flames for you, Alexis. Besides, news on panix works a whole
lot better than mail (except, of course, that we have to run fsck every day to
retrieve our lost inodes, but that's not A/UX's fault in particular...)

Gee, I use UUCP all the time on MY system and haven't had any real problems.
UUCP is complicated and takes a little care and feeding but that is the case
with any implementation I have seen. Maybe part of the problem lies with
the system manager?
