[comp.unix.aux] 4MB SIMMS and A/UX

tony@playfair.Stanford.EDU (Tony Cooper) (07/03/90)

The Mac II needs special 4MB SIMMS (with the test line disabled using a PAL).
And the rumour is that it needs the IIx ROM upgrade. Is this rumour really true?
What about putting the SIMMs in in the wrong order. If 4MB SIMMs are put in
bank A the Mac II will not boot (or so the tech note says). So what about
putting 1MB SIMMs in bank A and 4MB SIMMs in bank B.

The the Mac will boot. It will also see the SIMMs in bank B. My understanding
is that it will recognize them as 1MB SIMMs making 8MB altogether. This is
right right?

Now boot A/UX. What will A/UX see in bank B? Will it see 16MB or will it see
4MB? If it sees 4MB can it be made to see 16MB? I bet it can. But I'm only
guessing. Logically why is bank B different from A? I bet it's not. I bet a
bit of software can make A/UX see 16MB if it can't already.

Why is this question important? Well the FDHD upgrade is not free so why do
it if it is not necessary.

Cheers,
Tony Cooper
