There are several kernel modules which are part of AppleTalk. I don't bother to take them out of my kernel. I just change the interface. I've got a modem cable on tty0 and a terminal (mac +) on tty1. It works. It doesn't depend on having an ethernet card installed. If you have an ethernet card, and want to use ethertalk, be suer to bring the intercafe back up (appletalk -u) after editing the appletalkrc file.
