I just installed (for the 2nd time) A/UX 2.0 from floppy disks to my internal 80 MB HDSC. My system consists of A Mac IIcx, 80MB HDSC internal, 160MB HDSC external, 8MB RAM. Each of the times I have installed A/UX on the system the following scenarion has occurred. I go through the installation procedures, login as root, add a root password, etc. This works fine and I get into the A/UX system. After I logout and try to log in again, I'll get the login prompt, enter root and the password and the system will sit for about 2 minutes. There i ssome SCSI activity at the geinning and then a gap of a minute or more, and then the login prompt returns. Putting me into an endless cycle. Once ina while I have been able to get in via the Guest account, I looked around at things like the password file and things appear okay. Often the smae thing happens with the Guest account as with root. I have been using Unix systems for years and never had a problem such as this, does anyone else out there have clue. Thanks in advance. Chris -- - - terse, graphically uninteresting, .signature follows: - - Christopher C. Wilder-Smith - The MITRE Corporation - cws@mbunix.mitre.org -

There i ssome I too have experinced this, and have seen references to it by someone else on the net. I reported this to Apple in the first 30 days of free telephone "help" (I use the term loosely). They never got back to me with a fix. I have found that hitting the return key a few times will usually get you logged in (and paint the top of the screen with trash.) Someone else suggested typing command ".". Have you hacked any .profiles to do any prompting? Someone suggested it might be hung waiting for you to type something, but you never saw the propmt. a.schnable@att.com

I suspect that somewhere in the startup code someone is WRITING DIRECTLY TO THE SCREEN making the faulty assumption that the screen is in one bit mode. If this ever starts happening repeatably, I will switch my screen to one bit mode before starting up, so I can try to read the message(s). Comments, Apple? Herb Weiner (herbw@midas.WR.TEK.COM)
