APPLE STRENGTHENS COMMITMENT TO INDUSTRY STANDARDS: JOINS UNIX INTERNATIONAL
AND THE OPEN SOFTWARE FOUNDATION
CUPERTINO, California -- September 17, 1990 -- Apple Computer, Inc. today
announced it has joined the two major UNIX consortia -- UNIX International and
the Open Software Foundation. This action bolsters Apple's support of industry
standards and ensures earliest access to emerging UNIX technologies. In
addition, Apple has announced that A/UX, its Macintosh computer UNIX platform,
will comply with the X/Open Portability Guide (XPG).
"Apple offers our customers a unique and powerful arsenal -- the benefits
of the popular Macintosh computing environment combined with industry
standards," said Randy Battat, Apple's vice president of worldwide product
marketing . "By joining both UNIX consortia, we can evaluate all proposed
technologies and adopt those that best meet the needs of our customers.
Compliance with X/Open's XPG provides yet another important standard for our
customers in business, universities and governments throughout the world."
A/UX 2.0 is Macintosh for UNIX customers . It presents the familiar and
intuitive Macintosh computer desktop and runs the shrink-wrapped productivity
applications that have made Macintosh famous. A/UX 2.0 enables users to have a
single system on their desktop for all their daily work including Macintosh,
UNIX, and X Window System applications plus MS-DOS and Motif applications using
third-party products.

Great! A couple of questions spring to mind tho... 1) Will we now see A/UX ship with Motif libraries as part of the X11 product? Don't all the other OSF hardware vendors do this? 2) Will Apple move A/UX 3.0 to UI-System Vr4 or to OSF/1 as the core technology for their UNIX offering? 3) Or will Apple ship MacMach [with MacOS support] as A/UX 3.0? Oooh, take that Mr. Jobs (yes I know OSF/1 uses Mach as well). Or are we waiting for the multi-threaded MacOS ROMs before we tackle such things as question 2 & 3? -David Williams "Or perhaps we just wait for the 88k based boxes from Apple"
