[comp.unix.aux] Kinetics Etherport II

einhorn@hydra.unm.edu (E Drew Einhorn ADV.SCI.Inc) (09/14/90)

I scrounged up an old (circa 1987) Kinetics EtherPort II. It has a REV
1.0 ROM (always an ominous rev). The board is etched on the back as
Rev A, there is also a sticker on the back with Rev E.

I have no documentation or software to go with it.

The board has one switch SW1 that appears to be for selecting
thick/thin ethernet.

There are two jumpers J1 and J2. I have no idea what they do.

Normally my mac will be connected to the network via SLIP. But I need
to connect it via the ethernet to see if my NFS mount is failing as a
result of a SLIP problem or a NFS problem.

Do I need any drivers specific to this card to get it to work in my Mac
IIci under A/UX 2.0? Should I get the ROM upgraded?

Who owns Kinetics these days and what is their tech support phone
number?

Thanks,

I may be premature but it looks like the Kinetics Etherport II is an
orphan. Kinetics seems to have been broken up into little bits and
pieces. No one seems to be accepting responsibilty for tech support of
the Etherport II.

Hope the driver Jim Jagielski (jim@jagmac2.gsfc.nasa.gov) just made
available for anon ftp works w/ my system. Won't get a chance to try
it till tommorrow at the earliest.

I'm still leary of the Rev 1.0 ROM. And have no idea what jumpers J1
and J2 are for.

I saw this on Applelink today:

*****

Thanks to Jill Johnson of Novell Technical Support (NOVELL.WC) for this
information.

There are A/UX 2.0 drivers available from Dayna Communications for our
national cards. Dayna's number is 801-531-0600. These just became
available. If you are not sure if your boards are national, the national
EtherPort II boards take a 1/2 slot in the Macintosh, and the Intel
versions take a full slot. Dayna's A/UX drivers will not work on the
Intel cards, and we have drivers for only A/UX versions 1.0 and 1.1 for
the Intel boards.

By "national", I think they mean "National Semiconductor" as opposed to
"Intel." You could contact Novell Technical Support by
  novell.wc@applelink.apple.com

Disclaimer: I'm simplying copying what I saw. I don't know any more.
