[comp.unix.aux] X Windows - Fatal Server Bug!

jmm@skivs.UUCP (Joel M. Miller) (09/26/90)

I have A/UX 2.0 working pretty well, and so was emboldened to try to install
Apple's X Window System v11r3. No problems installing it, but:

	% X
	can't ioctl(): Invalid argument

	Fatal server bug!
	ioctl I_STR VIDEO_MAP_SLOT failed
	giving up
xinit: Connection refused (errno 81): unable to connect to X server

X seems to be claiming responsibility for the problem. Anyone from Apple
out there who can address this problem? Anyone actually have X Windows
working under 2.0?

(A/UX and X are running off an Apple HD SC 80. Problem occurs on a IIx
and on a IIci).

Could you be trying to start X from within the A/UX Finder environment?
Use the Console Emulator instead. [Our latest X Window System for A/UX
product smooths this out considerably]

Recently, I complained that "X" said "can't ioctl()" and "Fatal server bug!"
when I tried to start it up from the CommandShell.

I am pleased to report that, after a few quick email exchanges with Ron Flax
of Apple, the problem is solved. The problem was that I was shipped an
old (pre-A/UX 2.0) version of X11 by Apple Developers Group, which version
was intended to start-up from the CommandShell, whearas under A/UX 2.0, X11
must be started as a special Login Session Type. Ron gave me instructions
on how to manually install an X Windows Login Session Type.
