Thanks much to everyone who has responded (so far) to my
request for info about "cheap/simple" self-contained micros
for small businesses.
I thought the list at large might be interested in a brief listing
of the suggested systems. Some of this information has already been
CC'd to this list, some has not.
Suggested systems (all can run CP/M) [listed in no particular order]:
1) Osborne or Osborne clones. The clones apparently have larger
screens (and thusly are more usable) than "real" Osbornes.
2) Big Board II. Costs under $1000; requires that you add your
own disk drives, video monitor, and presumably a keyboard.
Sounds good for a super-cheap entry point.
3) Commodore 64.
4) Morrow Micro Decision. This sounds like a pretty good buy, though
I have some reservations about Morrow hardware and software,
having dealt with it in the past. The system includes a terminal,
64K, two 320KB minifloppies, a couple of serial ports, and some
random software. It is basically a turnkey system and runs about
$2000.
That's the gist of the replies so far. If any more information filters
in, I will relay it to the list. Once again, thanks to all who
responded!
