[comp.unix.aux] MacTCP Functionality under A/UX

gee@dciem.dciem.dnd.ca (Thomas Gee) (12/18/90)

I have a set of programs that I would like to run on my A/UX-equipped IIfx,
but they require MacTCP to communicate with the rest of the world. Up to the
point where such communication is required, they run quite nicely, but since
there is no MacTCP driver installed, they can go no further. Attempting to
install MacTCP under A/UX creates some wonderful crashes -- lovely video
effects -- but no communication ability.

Is there some way to provide the functionality of MacTCP under A/UX, for
example a version of MacTCP that runs under A/UX?

Thanks in advance,
	Tom.

A/UX 2.0 and greater include a custom version of MacTCP. Do not attempt
to install the MacOS versions of MacTCP, as they will not work correctly.
Many programs, including MacX, rely on MacTCP and are compatible with
A/UX.

;-) Hope this helps,

AUX 2.0 comes with MacTCP already installed. If you have removed it from
/mac/sys/Sys* then you'll have to get it back from you AUX distribution. The
MacTCP with AUX wont run under MacOS and the MacOS MacTCP will not run under
AUX. It says that right in the release notes.

Have a day,

The MacTCP functionality includes some neat things like using the UNIX
/etc/hosts (and Yellow Pages if appropriate) to find the list of known hosts,
instead of the normal "file of names the user has bothered to type in": one
package we tried fell over because it couldn't handle a list of 287 names!
