In reply to the person who praised the HP 3000 so highly:

Whom do you think you're kidding? I've got plenty of "facts" regarding
that system -- I've had the unhappy experience of working with
it (for both programming and "system manager" tasks) a number of times
in the recent past.

I consider the 3000's MPE operating system to be among the most
poorly designed and cumbersome collections of software with which I've
ever had to deal ... and I'm including IBM 360 JCL in that comparison!

I could fill a number of pages with specific extremely negative comments
regarding the hardware, software, and HP "service" (ha!) aspects of the
system, but this is clearly not the correct forum for such a discussion.
Anybody who wishes to pursue this topic with me via private messages
is more than welcome to do so.

P.S. I have gotten a number of replies to my query regarding "useful"
outside software for the 3000. It appears that a number of groups
"stuck" with 3000's have expended considerable effort to try create
workable environments from scratch, and much of that software is
probably available, including semi-reasonable editors (you can't write
a truly advanced display editor for the 3000 since it is essentially
half-duplex). After I've pursued the various leads people have sent
me, I'll summarize for the list. Thanks again to everyone who has
replied so far!
