[comp.unix.aux] Cu problems and lack of response from Apple

taylor@ddtisvr@uunet.uu.net (Brad Taylor) (02/27/91)

I have been trying to get 'cu' working on my MacIIfx for about two weeks now.
I am trying to get my TrailBlazer Plus going in any fashion with hope to be
able to get it to talk fast(i.e. PEP mode). I have been unsuccessful in getting
it to call a system at all automatically. I am running A/UX 2.0. I've got a
host setup in /usr/lib/uucp/L.sys that works fine with uucico, but not with cu.
I called the Apple HotLine and have been told that cu uses a different set of
ACU types than does uucico, however they have not been able to describe the ones
cu is supposed to know about. I have called them back twice and found that they
have been spending very little time on my problem. How difficult should it be to
glance at the source and find the ACU types? Does anyone out there have a clue
as to these ACU's? Any info in regards to get cu working is greatfully appre-
ciated. Thanks in advance!!

I don't know whether this has anything to do with Brad's problem, but the way
that Apple recommends that you set up your L.sys is compatible with uucp, but
not with cu. In the Network System Administration manual, they give an example:

doosy Any tty0 1200 tty01 "" ATDT5551212^M ogin: (etc)

This makes the dialing part of the expect-send sequence, which only happens
with uucp. cu doosy will simply connect you to the modem, and you must
manually dial with an ATDT command. In order for cu to dial automatically,
you must set up your L.sys to use the ACU function.

The cu that comes with A/UX does not work like most other cu's that I have used.
First of all you cannot use the -d option for debugging. That, I feel, was a
serious oversight on Apples part. Moreover, you cannot type "cu hostname" and
have it connect up to the host. You can type "cu -s9600 -ltty0 9671111" and
it will connect to the host if your modem understands Hayes AT command set. If
you type "cu hostname" you will get connected to the device specified in the
L.sys file and at the speed specified in the L.sys file but you will have to
talk to the modem to dial the phone. I fully expect Apple to rev the version
of UUCP sometime soon. When that happens you can expect a better version of
cu with better support for dialers.

On a related note, you can set up your own dialers for use with the "tip"
command. It is a BDS command that is used like "cu". Check it out.

The views expressed here are my own. Don't tell Apple I said anything. :-)
