[comp.unix.aux] SLIP interface develops periodic route amnesia

chet@Advansoft.COM (Chet Wood) (03/07/91)

I'm testing SLIP on an FX running A/UX 2.0. The other end of the link
is a Sparcstation 1+. If I ping the sun from the mac, I will get the
expected reply for a while, then for (exactly) 30 pings I'll get a
"sendto: Host is unreachable" error message. Then the connection is
restored for about 150 pings, when it drops out again. If I do a
"netstat -r" while the getting the error message, lo and behold the
routing entry for the SLIP link has disappeared. But when ping starts
working, netstat shows the route again.

What is going on???

Another symptom is that there is some sort of "keepalive"
packet that the mac sends over the interface every 30 seconds if there
is no other traffic. But every 5th one of these is missing!

Does anyone know what this keepalive packet is for, and if there's any
way to disable it? The Sun's SLIP implementation doesn't have it.

I've noticed another, probably unrelated problem with SLIP. That is,
after killing slip-attach with -HUP, it won't work when restarted,
unless you first touch the serial port with a command such as
"stty -n /dev/modem". Any clues on this one? I think I called tech
support on this last fall and they didn't know.

I'd like to at least get the route amnesia problem fixed, at least.
Otherwise I'll have to use our HPUX machine for our dialup SLIP
gateway.

Thanks for any suggestions.
