[comp.unix.aux] Mechanical Engineering Question

dconnor@hpcupt1.cup.hp.com (Daren Connor) (03/26/91)

A friend without net-access asked me a question I couldnt answer, so I thought
I'd call upon the net wisdom... I'm no mac expert, so please no flames on any
incorrect terminology, etc.

Anyway, my friend is a mechanical engineer and is starting a new job. He
is in the process of picking out his computing environment. He is strongly
considering some sort of mac (apparently), and has been reading about UNIX
on the mac (A/UX 2.0). His question is what would getting A/UX do
for him in terms of being able to run good ("standard" ?) mech. engineering
packages? Could you easily take a package that ran on another vendor's UNIX
platform and plop it down on A/UX and go? I told him I didnt believe it
would be that simple. All in all, he'd like to get an idea if there would
be enough benefit to him to justify the cost of A/UX. I don't think he'll
be doing that much development from what he tells me, by the way.

Thanks in advance for any help!
