In general, the verdict is that one can use a 103 type (300 baud) modem at 600 baud with reasonable results, depending on the modems involved. Triple modems work particularly well and even some acoustically coupled modems work. Combinations reported as working: two Vadic 3451's (in 103 mode) Omnitec acoustic talking to a GDC (fair results, good for reading news/mail, not for coding) Anderson-Jacobsen 300 baud to UTCSRG VAX (a Vadic triple, I think) Also, the Rixon is reported as handling 600 baud ok. The Datec and Datamex were reported as not being able to handle it. Also, no luck with the Hayes Smartmodem, but this might be because the 'smarts' aren't letting the 300 baud through. One should note well, as one person pointed out, that running at 600 baud is "really pushing things... at 600 baud the bits only last for two cycles [of the mark/space freq]", so the whole operation is marginal. Which means that the results reported above are not at all reliable, particularly since line quality is involved. Any other information, particularly on getting the Hayes to work at 600, would be most appreciated. peter rowley, univ. of toronto (Thanks to utcsrgv!dave, watcgl!dmmartindale, duke!dennis, and utcsrgv!jrc who provided the information.)
