[comp.unix.aux] A/UX 2.0.1, ftp update, and MacSI problem

barnett@grymoire.crd.ge.com (Bruce Barnett) (04/01/91)

Some people here had some unused copies of A/UX,
and when they finally tried to install it on a new MacSI, a failure occured.

The report on the screen says (approximately. I got the info from a phone).
-----
Autorecovery
SCSI reset
disk c5d0s0 error: SCSI timeout
generic disk c5d0s0 fatal error: logical block 0, physical block 195904
(repeated three times)

fsck: can't determine file system type of /dev/default
fsck: no file system specified

and finally

chroot failed
---------------

We updated an external 80 Meg Apple disk using the 2.0.1 Update we got
via ftp.

This same disk worked fine with a MacCI, but when we moved the disk to
a MacSI, we got the above error. The user tells me the system
software on the 80 Meg drive is 6.0.7.

Any clues?
Do we need the A/UX startup files that the Floppy update provides?
(We are also placing a call to Apple.)

Thanks for any help.

I had a problem with the Quantum drives that gave error messages
with SCSI failures also. LaCie helped me track down the problem
that turned out to be the ROM version on the hard drive. Which
version (using say SilverLining Disk Info) ROM is on the drives
if it is Quantum? I posted a message with the corrected ROM version
a few months ago. I can dig it out if you need them.
      Hope this helps,

Bruce, did they also have the StandAlone Shell A/UX *2.0.1* on the
hard disk? If they use the 2.0 Sash with si they will get into
trouble.

Thanks for the suggestions, gang. As Kent suggests, we will need the
2.0.1 SASH utilities (Which I expected). Also, Kevin might be right
about the ROM on the disk drive, because the external drive is old,
and had A/UX 1.0 on it.

I was just getting ready to call in all my markers, and scrounge up
favors as I suddenly found this system HAD to be upgraded in 5 days,
and you'll never guess what happened!

We just received the SI A/UX upgrade! The A/UX licenses were ordered
6 months ago so I didn't expect this.

I have to give Apple kudos for this. First the FTP upgrade, then the
patch for the NFS problem. I received the new A/UX X11R4 upgrade a few
weeks ago, and now this!

Apple, you're gonna spoil me!

The disk is indeed an ancient Quantum 80 Meg disk. How do I go about
getting the ROM updated?
