Since the net seems to be full of diasaster stories about calculators, let me offer mine. Several years ago I was a TA for an undergrad Physics coarse (Physics for pre-meds). One of the experiments involved a kludged barometer with about 10 pounds of mercury in it. The expected happened and the mercury found itself all over everything including an old TI machine. It turns out that the machine shorted out nicely. (the room was closed as a health hazard for several months).
