One more reply came in, from a person who's had the most success reported-- with a "grody Anderson Jacobsen" 300 baud modem, he regularly runs at 600 baud (switching to 600 b. is part of his .login file). In fact, he reports doing 1200 baud w. a 103 (!) over a university PBX. I have since been able to try a Hayes 300 b. Smartmodem talking to a Vadic triple; the Vadic receives reliably, but the Hayes does not. This might be suitable for Hayes -> Vadic file dumping, but one could not rely on having the Hayes receive anything reliably. Thanks go to druxv!cdash (charlie shub) for his success story and to Brad Templeton (watmath!bstempleton) who suggested the whole thing to begin with when he mentioned that his Novation CAT would run at 600 b. (in one dir'n only) with a Vadic triple.
