Transferable Technology
What it is, and how to achieve it

Abstract
Computer scientists need to get their wares out into the market-
place. If these wares are ideas born of basic research, then
they must be packaged in such a way as to make them readily
transferable into new software development. Such transferability
of technology is hard to obtain. This talk looks at the
speaker's experiences in three areas - software tools, data
abstraction and distributed programming - and draws conclusions
about what goes into making technology transferable. Mention
will be made in passing of Ada, occam and transputers.
