Gamut Mapping and Digital Colour Reproduction by Prof. John Beatty of Department of Computer Science University of Waterloo Abstract Any given colour output medium (e.g., a colour thermal printer) is typically unable to reproduce all the colours available in other media (e.g., a colour CRT). Even when this is possible, it is difficult to determine the coordinate mapping between two dev- ices. Moreover, the exact reproduction of colour usually does not accomplish the faithful reproduction of an image. We discuss an approach to this "cross-rendering" problem that was developed jointly by researchers from the National Research Council of Ca- nada, Waterloo and Xerox PARC, and describe further work now underway in the Computer Graphics Laboratory.
