Abstract
Since the founding of the University, substantial research effort
has been focussed on making the computer more accessible and us-
able for both students and faculty. These activities range from
the development of WATFOR and its successors in the early 60's to
the introduction of the microcomputer-based JANET and WATSTAR lo-
cal area networks early in this decade. Personal acquisition of
microcomputers adds a new dimension to the computer usability
problem and Project ARIES is exploring the implications of this
trend for both on-campus and distance education students. This
talk will trace the history and future directions of research in
computer usability at Waterloo, and discuss the active role
played by many of the corporate partners in these investigations.
