Does anybody know about the '80-column conversions' for Commodore VIC-20s and particularly for the Commodore 64? I have been told that the 64 can be put into 80-column mode by poking the interface and that no hardware modification is required. I understand that it takes a $1000 monitor to read 80-column color, but I am not so greedy; I would gladly use a B/W monitor. The 64 has 64K RAM and an expander capable of accepting plug-in CPU cards. (Commodore is already producing a Z80 for CP/M). IF the display can REALLY do 80-column and if there are going to be plug in CPU cards, I may soon be buying one. It looks as if it will be possible to do serious computing on a 'game machine'. PS: I am having a hard time evaluating the video features of the various computers. If somebody in Atari-land cares to describe the features of the Atari video controller, and somebody in VIC-land would do the same, I would be very grateful.
