ANNOUNCING THE UH GENE-SERVER RECONFIGURATION The UH Gene-Server is now moved to its new machine. Due to OS differences, some problems remain and some responses from the server will be a little strange (well, OK, *very* strange). The change-over occurred on Thursday, September 13, and with the execptions noted below should be transparent to most users. However, all users should read this entire note. The address: gene-server@bchs.uh.edu (Internet) gene-server%bchs.uh.edu@CUNYBM (BITNET/EARN/NETNORTH...) Send a message with the "Subject: " line "HELP" to get started. The old addresses will continue to work for an indeterminate length of time. Much software has been added and will be added in the coming weeks. VERY IMPORTANT NOTES: o THE SERVER CAN ONLY HANDLE ** ONE ** REQUEST PER MAIL MESSAGE. That is *one* help file, OR *one* GenBank (tm, DHHS) locus, or *one* PIR entry, ...etc. This is a programming limitation. I'm not a programmer. This will be fixed if possible, eventually. o ACCESSION NUMBER ACCESS DOES NOT WORK. I do not understand why the new shells (sh, csh, ksh, sh5 -- at least they all agree!) no longer execute a particular script properly. I don't know if accession number access can be restored. If it is, it will announced in all the usual places. I'm definitely not a programmer. o JUST ABOUT *EVERY* ACCESS WILL COME BACK WITH AN ERROR MESSAGE *PLUS* the requested sequence file, software, index, or other information. I'm not a shell programmer (see above); my apologies in advance for the inconvenience and confusion this will cause. o ANONYMOUS FTP acess has changed. The host is now meudo.uh.edu, Internet address 129.7.1.6. All software will be available by Saturday. The FTP archives will contain the same software and files as the Gene-server, except GenBank (tm, DHHS) which is available as usual from genbank.bio.net, IP address below. o ON SATURDAY EVENING, SEPTMBER 15, THE GENE-SERVER will be automagically upgraded to GenBank Release 64. If you prefer Release 63, contact davison@uh.edu. o THE SERVER WILL NOT BE UPDATED DAILY; it WILL be updated promptly for each major release. Weekly (daily?) updates are available via anonymous FTP from genbank.bio.net, Internet address 134.172.1.60. o SERVER MANGEMENT RESPONSE TIME WILL INCREASE GREATLY. You may not get a reply for several weeks. Again, my apologies in advance for the inconvenience. o THE ON-LINE DOCUMENTATION WILL BE WRONG. There's only one of me and I have a daytime job, so I will be editing the multitude of help and index files to reflect the new situation. However, that will take quite a while. This new machine, disk space, and conversion is courtesy of the Vice President for Information Technologies at the University of Houston, Dr. Ira Weiss, and the University Computing Center. Additional support is provided by the Institute for Molecular Biology, and the Department of Biochemical and Biophysical Sciences. I would especially like to thank Mr. Alan Pfeiffer-Traum for system service assistance during the conversion. Please report problems to gene-server-management@bchs.uh.edu, (or gene-server-managment@bchs.uh.edu), although a response to your message may be (considerably) delayed. dan davison assistant professor of biological and biophysical sciences bchs-5500 university of houston 4800 calhoun houston, tx 77204-5500 tel: 713-749-7599 Internet: davison@uh.edu fax: 713-749-3239 BITNET: DAVISON@UHOU msgs: 713-749-2801 CIS: 74065,41 The UH Gene-server is not funded by any agency or affiliated in any way with the contractors and subcontractors on the NIH GenBank contract.
