THE XEROX 1100 SMALLTALK-80 SYSTEM IS NOW AVAILABLE

After 3 1/2 months of beta-testing, the Xerox 1100 Smalltalk-80 System is ready
for delivery to customers.

The Smalltalk-80 System is being offered as a software option for the Xerox
1100 Scientific Information Processor.

Smalltalk-80, the culmination of 10 years of research and development by the
Software Concepts Group (SCG) at PARC, is a personal, integrated, interactive
programming environment ideally suited to exploratory programming and prototype
development. Typical applications of Smalltalk-80 include user interface
design, simulation and modeling, and graphics-oriented applications. An earlier
version of Smalltalk was used in the development of the Star user interface.

The Xerox 1100, also developed at PARC, is a powerful personal scientific
workstation and information processor that is currently being used for
artificial intelligence applications and exploratory software development. The
1100 supports both the Smalltalk-80 and Interlisp-D programming environments.

The Xerox 1100 Smalltalk-80 System is being used internally by the Imaging
Systems Division of XEOS, Pasadena, for customer applications development. The
integrated environment provides a full range of software development tools
which facilitate the rapid design and development of sophisticated interactive
applications. System facilities include text and graphics editors, incremental
compilation and change management, source language debugger, a
graphics-oriented user interface taking full advantage of the mouse, dynamic
memory management, a library of approximately 4000 functions, and performance
measurement tools.

Smalltalk-80 is available internally for both the 1100 and 1132 (Dorado). Two
versions exist: the "internal version", currently used by SCG for research and
by XEOS for applications development, and the "customer version", the version
offered as a product to customers. The customer version is described in detail
in two upcoming books from Addison-Wesley: "Smalltalk-80: The Language and Its
Implementation" by Adele Goldberg and Dave Robson of SCG and "Smalltalk-80, The
Interactive Programming Environment" by Adele Goldberg. The former, available
in bookstores in March 1983, provides a detailed description of the
Smalltalk-80 System from a programmer's point of view and from an implementer's
point of view. The latter, available in bookstores sometime in 1983, is a
user's guide consisting of a complete description of the user interface as well
as a summary of the programming language.
