IBM: do they do supercomputers? ;-) First, we had the Karp Challenge. Then, we had the Bell Prize. Then came ETA's SuperQuest and Massive Parallelism challenge.... Well, Alan paid his $100. Gordon is paying money out yearly, but the rules are on the verge of being revised. ETA, well, both of those have disappeared with the company. The following was picked up at the Kartashev's Supercomputer Conference: IBM Call for Paper, 1989 Supercomputing Competition CASH Awards for Outstanding Work in Large Scale Computer Analysis and modeling The IBM Corp. and IBM Canada, Ltd. are sponsoring the 1989 IBM [here's the catch:] 3090 Supercomputer Competition IBM invites authors from industry, research and academia to submit papers in competition for major CASH [my emphasis] awards. The competition will be for First, Second, and Third Prizes in each of four divisions: The divisions are: Physical Science and Mathematics Engineering Life and Health Sciences Social Sciences, Humanities, and the Fine Arts [These categories might be somewhat controversial: FA for example, not many artists can afford 3090 time. Steve, you can complain about the lack of CS, but knowing IBM, its math.] The prizes in each division are: First Prize - $25,000 Second Prize - $15,000 Third Prize - $10,000 [The carot. This is quite generous!] All papers must describe analysis and modeling work using an IBM 3090 Supercomputer as the primary computational system [the stick, this means you can't use it as a Cray server ;)]. Judging will be done by panels of noted non-IBM experts in each division [who?]. IBM plans to publish one or more volumes of PROCEEDINGS: 1989 IBM 3090 Supercomputing Competition. The PROCEEDINGS will include all prize papers, selected additional papers, and the abstracts of all accepted papers. To enter the competition, authors must submit an acceptable abstract and complete the registration procedures. All necessary information is provided in the General Information Brochure which can be obtained from your local IBM Branch Office or by contacting - In the United States: Competition Administrator IBM Corporation Department 72/BNG 44 S. Are contests the indicators of not great "super" sales? ;) The above which appeared not as a glossy, but just a xerographic piece of paper (an IBM copier I am sure) can easily be picked apart for details. Well, I hope CRI never offers a contest!} Longish signature follows "Type 'n' now" Another gross generalization from --eugene miya, NASA Ames Research Center, eugene@aurora.arc.nasa.gov resident cynic at the Rock of Ages Home for Retired Hackers: "You trust the `reply' command with all those different mailers out there?"
