Have you considered using transputer-based boards for PCs or SUN's. There are a number of manufacturers of such boards and distributors in the U.S. and Canada (e.g. Micro-way, CSA). There are also very good operating systems for these systems available at low cost. The Trollius O/S from the Cornell theory center is excellent and works with UNIX and DOS host machines. The inmos T800 at 25MHz is rated at about 1.5 Mflops (linpack). With 4 per board (8 Meg SRAM per processor) you can put together quite a nice parallel computer inside a PC-AT. I act as a consultant to a company in Montreal that packages such systems if you are interested.
