Investigations into the theory, implementation, and application of "Parallel Object-Oriented Programming Systems/Languages," also known as "Distributed OOPS/L" and "Concurrent Object-Based Programming" have been going on for quite some time. For a good set of current sources and information, see the April 1989 SIGPLAN NOTICES (Vol. 24, Number 4) wherein is printed a collection from the 1988 Workshop on OBCP held in conjunction with OOPSLA-88. Another workshop on OBCP was held in conjunction with ECOOP (European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming) this past summer. Also check any ACM OOPSLA (Object-Oriented Programming Systems and LAnguages) Conference proceedings - there are usually a few papers. Finally, at least two recent books have related papers and applications: A.H. Bond and L. Gasser, READINGS IN DISTRIBUTED ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, Pitman/Morgan Kaufmann, 1988, Akinori Yonezawa and Mario Tokoro, OBJECT-ORIENTED CONCURRENT PROGRAMMING, MIT Press, 1987. I think Aki Yonezawa has another forthcoming MIT press book which is a collection of papers on his language/system ABCL/1 (Actor-Based Concurrent Language/1). -- Les Les Gasser Distributed Artificial Intelligence Group Dept. of Computer Science, SAL-200 USC Los Angeles, CA 90089-0782 (213) 743-7794 gasser@pollux.usc.edu
